Five Days training in Teencentric©, a specialist intervention to address teen violence to parents.

Parent abuse has been described as a relatively new phenomenon and there has been a recent explosion of UK research and interest in this area.This is a crucial yet complex area of specialist work within the domestic violence sector and it is essential that practitioners have the skills and knowledge to work with this ever-increasingly identified issue.

Teencentric© is a specialist intervention designed to provide an intervention to address the issue of adolescent violence to parents.The intervention is structured with a 21 session programme, created and implementing a mix of cognitive behavioural, skills and restorative practice based curriculum used in a group setting with young people and parents.Young people work together to learn skills to prevent the use of violent and abusive behaviour and gain understanding about violence, abuse and power vs. respect, trust and safety in family relationships.Parents attend a parent group where they learn safety planning and parenting skills to support their child/young adult in using nonviolent behaviour.

In a parent/teen group, families learn a respectful family model for addressing conflict. Together, parents and teens learn and practice skills for respectful communication and problem solving.Evidence based and best practice strategies useThe curriculum employs practices that have been researched and are considered best practices for behavioural change. These include cognitive behavioural learning, skill development, solution focused and motivational interviewing techniques to help youth move from external to internal incentive to change.

Training will consist of five full days, typically 9.30am -4.30pm with lunch & refreshments provided.

Who should attend? This training will be crucial for social workers, youth justice workers, family therapists, refuge workers, counsellors, youth workers, existing domestic violence workers wishing to learn new skills as well as psychologists and mental health workers.
